Napier mayor hits out at counterpart over Hawke's Bay amalgamation

Mayor hits out at counterpart over Hawke's Bay amalgamation

Napier's mayor has hit out at his Hastings counterpart after a new report into amalgamating the bodies.
The report was commissioned by Napier City Council, Wairoa and Central Hawke's Bay District Councils and Hawke's Bay Regional Council.

The document is highly critical of a previous report, by former Auckland Regional Council chief Peter Winder.
Napier Mayor Bill Dalton says the new report has a lot of good points, and Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule needs to hear them.
"Lawrence needs to move on from this thinking that any information he brings to the amalgamation debate is fact and any information others bring to the debate is farcical and should be discredited."

He says he can't work out how the Winder report thought it would only cost $18 million to amalgamate.

"Sometime later he came out with a statement that said 'oh I thought you were all on the same computer platform. Because you're not, amalgamation will cost many millions of dollars more'. What an 'airy-fairy' sort of thing."
