A unified stance on the future governance of the Wairoa District will be developed by the Mayor and Councillors next week.
Opinions will be channelled via a dedicated workshop following the next full council meeting on Tuesday, December 10. The aim of the workshop is to develop a draft reorganisation policy to formalise an opinion on the Local Government Commission’s proposed plan to amalgamate the councils of Hawke’s Bay.
Council received the proposal at last week’s Forum and, after initial discussion, decided to spend time on due diligence before next week’s workshop.
Mayor Craig Little said while the council will develop a policy, this is not the end of process.
“As leaders of the community, it’s important that we have a formal opinion. However, there will most certainly be a referendum where the public will decide on the issue.

Once the policy is drafted, it will be released to the public for consultation.
