Queensland lobby group warn Hawkes Bay not to amalgamate.

An Australian lobby group has added it's voice to Hawkes Bays anti-amalgamation campaign and is warning New Zealand not to fall into the same trap as Queensland.

Queensland Local Government Reform Alliance (QLGRA) say amalgamation has been disasterous for their region and likened it to an expensive disease.

They say the idea to reduce Queenslands 157 councils to 73 in 2007 seemed like a good idea at the time but has proven to be costly and ineffective.

QLGRA are urging New Zealanders to put a stop to amalgamation before it's too late.

The groups message however has been met with condescension by Hasting Mayor Lawrence Yule who said it was likely the statements had been organised by those against any Hawke's Bay amalgamation.

Napier Mayor Bill Dalton along with the Napier City Council and local anti-amalgamation lobby group DAD deny they had anything to do with QLGRA's plea.
